Jessi Grieser will talk about the vibrant, rich variety that is African American Language: the language variety used by many, but not all—and not exclusively!—African Americans in the United States. She’ll explain a bit about its origins, cultural significance, and social meaning, and then talk about the ways it is (mis)represented in social and broadcast media and how both linguists and everyday speakers can effect change in their own and others’ language attitudes.
