Breaking into Broadcasting Live in the Field: Tips for a Freelance Sports Announcer
Audio broadcasting requires not only the right equipment, but hours of preparation prior to heading to the field for broadcast, where it's important to research information about the team, including their standing, trends heading into the game, information about the schools themselves and the coaches for talking points during the broadcast. Once at the field, it's important to talk with both of the coaches and ask specific questions about the team and players. Since I broadcast for a specific team, I try to include at least a student-athlete interview as part of a short pregame show, so it's important to know some things about the player before you walk into it. Lastly, keep in mind who your audience is and what type of broadcasting you're doing. Audio broadcasting will require more description about what's going on in the field, whereas television broadcasting allows more freedom to tell stories and introduce background information.
